Just a quick post to say that n8 and I watched Eat Drink Man Woman last night (it was playing at the party but we hadn’t sat down to watch it yet). What a great food movie. There are so many beautiful shots of Asian cooking and service. You even get to see Master Chef Chu inflating a duck with his own breath! I loved seeing closeups of the knifework. Chu had this technique of dicing an onion whereby he sliced half of it in the usual way, to make half moons, then tilting those to one side and slicing again to dice. At least I think that’s what he did. Anyway, it ruled, and I’m going to try and fail to do it tonight!

I made my second roast chicken last night. This was a much bigger bird, about seven pounds, and we have huge amounts of leftover meat. n8 helped me carve it. We got the meat off, but we still need a tutorial. I tried Jacques Pépin’s method, like I said I would the other day, but he was working with some kind of tiny bird in that picture, and his technique wasn’t doing much for this beast. Uncle Teddy’s method works really well for the breast, it should be noted.

Tonight I have to figure out what to do with all of these leftovers…

Eat Drink Man Woman was one of the movies sent over to me in a care package. It’s one of my favorites, but it unfortunately makes me lament the absence of good Chinese food here in Paris!
